A sensitization programme on HIV/AIDS and planning workshop for health awareness for villages of western Angami region was held here today at Sechü Zubza council hall with NLA speaker, Kiyaneilie Peseyie as chief guest. At the sensitization programme, Kiyaneilie in his address underlined the importance of the ‘HIV/AIDS issue’. “HIV and AIDS is not a medical or a scientific issue alone. It is most fundamentally a human issue” he said.
HIV/AIDS being existent in our state, he said the society needs to be more open in discussing HIV/AIDS, the ways to prevent, control, treat and overcome the challenges it poses, while also stating that HIV has now become a “chronic manageable disease” with advance of science and technology. He said ‘HIV/AIDS is not alone a health problem but also a development problem’ and to ensure that society is not destroyed by the pandemic, he also that the Nagaland State AIDS Council has adopted the “State AIDS Policy”, which would soon be passed in the assembly session.
On the unavailability for HIV vaccine or cure for AIDS, he stressed on spreading knowledge for prevention and educating people about the facts of the disease. TB, which is one of the most common opportunistic infection for People Living with HIV (PLHIV) he called upon to avail the testing and drugs that is provided free of cost by RNTCP in all health centre. Further lauding the NRHM for bringing up health awareness programmes, he urged the villagers to take one’s health as an individual responsibility.
State Coordinator LFA-UNAIDS, Dr.Vinito Chishi and other members from NSAC and NRHM also briefed the gathering on the various issues, concern and prevention of HIV/AIDS and related diseases. The programme was attended by villagers from all eleven villages of the Western Angami region. Mhasikhotuo, Chairman Sechü Zubza Village Council delivered the welcome address, while President Western Angami Public Organisation proposed the vote of thanks. The programme was organised by Western Angami Women Organisation and Kekhrie Foundation, supported by the Nagaland Legislative Forum for HIV/AIDS, NSACS, NRHM and DOTS.
