LONGLENG, JANUARY 5 (MExN): Concerned over the escalating drug consumption in the district, the office of the Hukphang Orangkong Bhumnyu (HOB) Union, Longleng has sought the intervention of the Deputy Commissioner while proposing certain measures to curb drug abuse.
In a representation, HOB Union through its president H Tenchem and general secretary T Manpong suggested strict control on drug users by way of implementing stringent measures to correct the consumption of drugs in the district like increase in surveillance and conduct of regular raids to identify and apprehend drug users.
It urged the DC to prevent release or bail out of arrested drug users and sellers by instructing Chief Judicial Magistrates /District Jail Longleng and related authorities not to release or grant bail to individuals arrested for drug related offences. Strict measures need to be in place to ensure that those involved in drug activities face the legal consequences of their actions, it stated.
The Union also proposed regulation on sale of medicines contributing to drug abuse while observing that medicines such as Alprazolam, Spas and Cyclopam among others are being misused by the drug users. It, therefore, requested the DC to take necessary steps to control the sale of these medicines in local pharmacies.
Pharmacies should be prohibited from selling medicines such medicines without proper prescription. Strict monitoring and enforcement of regulation regarding the dispensing of such drugs will help in preventing the misuse, the Union observed.
It also urged the DC to scrutinize pharmacy licenses by ways of rigorous checks on licenses of pharmacies in Longleng district. Verifying the legitimacy of these establishments will contribute significantly to curbing the illicit sale of drugs and substances contributing to drug abuse, the Union has maintained.
