The state authorities will deploy a helicopter with a ‘Bambi Bucket’ to combat the spreading wildfire in the terrain of the Dzükou valley, Nagaland.

Giving this update, the Kohima Deputy Commissioner, Henok Buchem informed that the damage is extensive, and human intervention is not feasible.

After a meeting held by the District administration and stakeholders, the State Government has decided to requisition IAF helicopter services for Bambi Bucket operations.

The team including SDRF, Police, DBs, drone operators, and Southern Angami Youth Organization volunteers will continue to monitor the situation tomorrow, authorities cited.

The DC Kohima informed that the operation is 'expected' tomorrow.

A Bambi Bucket operation is a wildfire fighting technique where a helicopter uses a suspended, collapsible container to drop water on fires. The operation involves a helicopter, equipped with a Bambi Bucket, flying to a nearby water source like a lake or swimming pool to fill the container. The pilot-controlled valve is then used to release a stream of water over the fire.

Around 20 trekkers were evacuated this evening from the Dzükou valley by the SDRF and SAYO volunteers, the DC further added.

The wildfire reportedly erupted on January 25 and came to the knowledge of locals in the afternoon prompting immediate evacuation of trekkers from the valley alongside containment efforts.

The SAYO has also temporarily suspended trekking to Dzükou valley until further notice.
