PHEK, SEPTEMBER 4 (MExN): ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Phek, successfully conducted a five-day vocational training on Soil Health Management under Natural Farming Systems for youths from August 29 and September 1–4 at KVK Phek, Porba. The programme aimed to equip participants with practical knowledge and skills in sustainable soil fertility management, organic nutrient application, and eco-friendly crop production.
The inaugural sessions highlighted kiwi production by Manjunath K S, SMS (Horticulture), and livestock waste management through composting and bio-security measures by Dr Harini K R, SMS (Animal Science). Dr T Esther Longkumer, Chief Technical Officer (Soil Science), stressed the importance of natural farming in improving soil health, reducing chemical dependency, and enhancing farmers’ income. Swuyievezo Dzudo, IARI Innovative Farmer Awardee 2025, motivated participants by sharing his personal experiences in adopting innovative and sustainable farming practices.
During the training, participants received hands-on guidance in compost preparation, application of bio-inputs, crop residue management, and straw mulching to conserve moisture and control weeds. Practical demonstrations on composting, beejamruta and jeevamruta, combined with film shows, exhibitions, and on-field exercises, enabled the participants to gain in-depth understanding of hill-friendly natural farming techniques.
The programme concluded with a valedictory session where participants were provided with inputs and certificates. The training inspired them to implement sustainable and cost-effective farming methods in their own fields, strengthening their capacity to improve soil fertility and crop productivity in an eco-friendly manner.
