ICAR popularizes Amrapali mango in Nagaland

Dimapur, March 25 (MExN): The ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Nagaland Centre, Medziphema organised three-day training on ‘Livelihood Improvement and Income Enhancement of Tribal Farmers through Scientific Mango Cultivation’ funded under TSP from March 22 to 24.  

The training, attended by 30 participants from Dimapur, Wokha, Peren and Kohima districts, was organized as part of the TSP project for popularization of Amrapali variety of mango in Nagaland.  

During the three-day programme, courses related to grafting techniques, nursery management, integrated nutrient management, integrated disease management, integrated pest management, post harvest management, and value addition were covered by scientists of the centre. Practical demonstrations on mango grafting and nursery management technique were also conducted during the period.  

Aabon Yanthan, Scientist and Coordinator of the training, highlighted the importance of mango and other horticultural crops cultivation in Nagaland. He urged the farmers to take up processing and value addition of various horticultural crops for doubling farmers’ income.  

Dr. Azeze Seyie, Scientist (Spices, plantation, medicinal and aromatic plants), apprised the trainees on the scope for increasing the area under different horticultural crops especially in jhum land. She also stressed on the importance of quality planting materials for successful orchard establishment.  

Dr. DJ Rajkhowa, Joint Director, in his speech urged the trainees to follow scientific mango farming. He encouraged the farmers to adopt integrated farming system for a sustainable livelihood.  

About 2,500 mango saplings of Amrapali variety were distributed to the participants by the Joint Director.
