A two day long ICSSR international Conference on ‘Digital Humanities and Decolonising Education in North East India: Challenges and Opportunities” concluded today at Kohima Science College, Jotsoma.

The second day of the conference commenced with a paper presentation session which had four paper presentations, all of which revolved around the theme of Digital Humanities and its intersection with education.

The second session of the day was a talk on “NEP 2020: What it means for the North-East India” delivered by Dr Ruth Z Hauzel, Associate Professor, GITAM, Hyderabad. She stated that the North East region is a linguistic hotspot with numerous diverse languages and dialects, most of which lack standardised scripts and educational resources. She highlighted the challenges of NEP 2020 in the region, some of which were, lack of trained teachers, social and economic barriers.

She observed that overcoming the many challenges will require sustained effort, collaboration and a deep understanding of the regions unique context.

She concluded with a call to educators and policy makers to actively deliberate on the implications of NEP 2020 while suggesting that a context specific multilingual education policies may be required for the North East.

The talk was moderated by Abeino Zashu, Academic Dean and Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, Capital College of Higher Education, Kohima while the recorder was Opangmenla Jamir, IQAC Coordinator and Assistant Professor, Department of English, Capital College of Higher Education.

Dr Rukulu Kezo, the convener of the Conference Organizing committee chaired the session.

The conference brought together 22 paper presenters from across the country and beyond, with a paper presenter from the University of Essex, London.

The conference was held under the aegis of the Department of English, Kohima Science College Jotsoma in collaboration with Capital College of Higher Education & CUE Academy and Centre for Person Centered Education, Kohima and supported by Department of Higher Education, Govt of Nagaland.
