The Watsu Mungdang, the apex Ao women’s body said that it had for a long time been concerned about the influx of illegal immigrants into Nagaland and that as a step towards the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants in Mokokchung, the Watsu Mungdang recently passed a four-pronged resolution to address the problem. This include conducting various programs and seminars in order to create general awareness; conducting a survey of all non-locals; conducting surprise checking of ILP and other documents from time to time and to meet the administration regarding the same.
The Watsu Mungdang informed that it was currently in the process of executing all the aforesaid activities in coordination with other NGOs and competent authorities for the further implementation of the resolution.
The said resolution was passed during the 15th Watsu Mungdang Conference held April 20-22, 2005. The president of Watsu Mungdang Supongla Lemdor explained that the resolutions could not be executed in time due to the hectic preparations the Mungdang had to undertake for its Silver Jubilee celebrations which was then due to be held April 19-20, 2007.
Talking to The Morung Express, Supongla Lemdor disclosed that the Watsu Mungdang will execute the resolution phase-by-phase and also added that all ground works for the execution of the same is being undertaken. Lemdor also justified the initiative of the Ao Students’ Conference (AKM) where by the latter is currently undertaking its “Survival 2007” campaign.
The AKM had earlier directed all immigrants who arrived in the district of Mokokchung after 2000 till date to leave the district on or before July 11 next “for a time being” in order to carry out a verification and rectification exercise which is essentially for the protection of culture, custom and economy of the district. The Watsu Mungdang president categorically said that it supports the AKM in this particular issue.
The Additional Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung T.Nungsang NCS, who is also the administrator of Mokokchung Municipal Council also told this correspondent that the “Survival 2007” campaign initiated by the AKM is genuine but advised that while doing so, the means adopted should not be in contradiction with the law of the land.
The Administrator also said that in order to detect the illegal immigrants, the “legal immigrants” should be ready to cooperate, and expressed that certain minor inconveniencies presumed to be faced by the later group is regretted.
It may be mentioned here that, as per unconfirmed sources, Mokokchung is the worst affected district by illegal immigrants in Nagaland and has the highest number of immigrants in the State, next only to Dimapur. The presence of an overwhelming number of immigrants in the district makes it rather impossible for the authorities and the concerned NGOs to detect the illegal immigrants without undertaking an unconventional or radical means like that of the AKM’s Survival 2007 campaign.
