Illegal taxation continues in Dmr; DCCI demands action

Dimapur, September 20 (MExN): The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) on Monday demanded that the Nagaland government communicate with its Assam counterpart and put an immediate stop on collection of illegal taxes by transporter bodies based at Lahorijan and Khatkhati.

On Monday, the DCCI issued a statement claiming that some transporter unions based at border towns of Lahorijan and Khatkhati are levying illegal taxes on goods transport vehicles enroute to Nagaland and Manipur.

“Equally baffling is that Nagaland Police personnel are escorting these vehicles which have paid illegal taxes at Lahorijan/Khatkhati,” it said, while demanding that the Nagaland government talk with Assam government and put a stop on collection of such illegal taxes.

The DCCI also stated that it was alarmed and shocked at reports that government agencies have started collecting illegal taxes on  goods transport vehicles at police check gates and traffic intersections  barely four days after the state-wide total shutdown of all shops and  business houses on September 16.

“Such acts of audacity and daylight robbery are an insult and mockery of the government of the day. The government should immediately put a stop to this,” it asserted.
