DIMAPUR, JANUARY 30 (MExN): The Joint Committee on Prevention of Illegal Immigrants (JCPI) today issued a statement appreciating the ILP Committee for its efforts to “bring about strong and permanent mechanism with real-time data for indigenous inhabitants in the state with electronic devices to facilitate and monitor visitor’s movement in the state.”
The JCPI said this after holding a meeting with the State Committee on Illegal Immigration today to jointly review the report to be submitted to the State Government for creating effective mechanism to check illegal influx of immigrants and monitor BEFR implementation in Nagaland.
A press note from the committee’s media cell observed that Nagaland state has been “deprived of BEFR protection for want of effective system even after 56 years of its establishment.” “It is the strong desire of the indigenous population to see the day light of effective BEFR which can protect the indigenous people from economic exploitations and undesirable assimilation that dilute our ways of life,” it added.
The JCPI also appreciated the assurance of the committee to submit the final report within one week's time.
Jan 31 meeting pointless: JCPI
With regard the government’s consultative meet on the CAB at Chumoukedima on January 31, the JCPI reminded that the CAB has already been passed in the Lok Sabha and therefore the government making a U-turn on the issue is a mere eyewash.
The January 31 meeting, it reasoned, is a “pointless PR exercise.” The JCPI further said that “tribe hoho leaders are not so gullible as to be swayed by the so called experts from legal and administrative backgrounds who will be deployed by the government to 'convince' the leaders.”

“Thus no one should attend such a pointless meet. In any case participants are requested not to append their signatures on any document lest the government misconstrue their attendance as support for the state government on the CAB issue,” it added.

The Naga People's Front (NPF) has decided to boycott the consultative meeting on the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) 2016 convened by the NDPP led PDA government on January 31. The decision was taken during a party core committee meeting. In a press conference, NPF spokesperson Achumbemo Kikon said the present government is not taking the CAB issue seriously and misleading the people.
The resolution of NPF core committee stated that the NDPP led PDA government had not opposed the bill when it was tabled in the Lok Sabha on January 6 “which is a clear indication that they have endorsed the bill in totality.” It said the government has no moral right whatsoever to convene a consultative meeting and any such meeting would be just eye wash to shift the blame to the political parties and civil societies.
The meeting also resolved to seriously re-examine the coalition status in the state of Manipur, Kikon stated.
