Rainfall, thunderstorm accompanied with lightning is ‘very likely’ at isolated places in north-east states including Nagaland on February 20-21, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed in an update on February 19.

“Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & hail at isolated places very likely over east Arunachal Pradesh and northeast Assam and with lightning at isolated places over West Bengal & Sikkim and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura,” stated the IMD’s five-day All India Weather Forecast Bulletin (AIWFB) updated on Saturday evening.

On February 21, the national weather forecaster further predicted that “thunderstorm accompanied with lightning at isolated places very likely over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura.”

However, there was no forecast of rain in the region for the next two days - February 22 and 23.

Elsewhere on February 23, the IMD forecasted likelihood of thunderstorm accompanied with lightning at isolated places over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

The IMD attributed the current weather conditions to the influence of a fresh Western Disturbance and its induced cyclonic circulation at the Western Himalayan Region; the persistence of cyclonic circulation over Madhya Maharashtra & neighbourhood and the cyclonic circulation over Southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea.
