IMFL worth over Rs 2 crore destroyed in Dimapur

IMFL worth approximately Rs 2.72 crore was destroyed at the Excise Directorate Complex, Dimapur on April 7.

Dimapur, April 7 (MExN): Various types of Indian-Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) having an approximate street value of Rs 2.72 crore were destroyed during a combined exercise conducted by the Dimapur District Excise Office, Narcotic Cell and Mobile Squad of Excise department on April 7.

The total number of seized materials destroyed at the event were 2,05,961 bottles of assorted IMFL and 116 litres of C/Liquor pertaining to 308 offence cases under the Nagaland Total Liquor Prohibition (NLTP) Act, 1989, informed a press release from Dimapur’s Deputy Commissioner of Excise (Narcotic Cell) Katoho Sumi.

According to the release, the liquor was destroyed at the Excise Directorate Complex, Dimapur and a programme was also held with the Dy Commissioner Excise (Hq) as the Chairperson of the Liquor Destruction Board.

In his address, the Commissioner of Excise & Prohibition Hotolu Swu congratulated the three wings of the Department for the commendable seizures in spite of all the situational constraints. As field personnel, the reward of successful seizures is of utmost satisfaction besides the obvious recognition by the superiors and competent authority, he said.  Swu also stated that the Excise workforce should keep on performing without being discouraged as there would be inevitable criticisms especially at a time when there is intense spotlight on the NLTP issue, the release stated.

The Additional Commissioner of Excise, Moarenba, in his brief speech added that the Excise personnel should continue their bounden duty in letter and in spirit so long as the Act stays in force. He also stated that the civil society at large needs to sensitise the people of its destructive effect and extend all cooperation to the enforcement authority at every level while adding that the state government too needs to look at the crucial aspect of strengthening the men and machinery for optimum administration of the enacted law.

According to the release, Moarenba also observed that since the liquor issue is a social one, the law and its implementation cannot be viewed in isolation of other factors and dynamics but needs to be addressed holistically. The Dy Commissioner of Excise (Hq) highlighted that the exceptional seizures would be duly acknowledged and given befitting commendation.’
