Dimapur, April 19 (MExN): The Department of History, Immanuel College organised a cultural event to mark World Heritage Day under the theme “Revisiting the Roots 4.0” at the college auditorium on April 18.

The programme was held in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and featured a series of cultural performances, including an enactment of an Ao folklore depicting the tragic love story of Etiben and Jina, a Phom folk song, a traditional war dance, indigenous games and a display of Naga ethnic cuisine.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Merensenla Jamir, Assistant Professor, Department of History, said that in Nagaland, heritage is not merely culture but identity, defining communities and reflecting deep-rooted traditions. She noted that heritage lives through stories, songs, festivals, dialects and ways of life.

Referring to this year’s World Heritage Day theme, “Emergency Response for Living Heritage in Contexts of Conflicts and Disasters”, she said it aligns closely with the programme’s theme as traditional knowledge and cultural practices play a crucial role in survival and recovery during crises. She emphasised the need to preserve both tangible and intangible heritage.

Dr Jamir also underscored the importance of instilling pride among younger generations in their cultural inheritance, warning that loss of connection with traditions could weaken cultural continuity. In a globalised world, preserving identity remains both a challenge and a responsibility, she added.

The programme was emceed by Noknyam Konyak and N Ngonlong Konyak. It began with an invocation by N Chumei Konyak, Assistant Professor, Department of History, followed by an exhortation by Principal Dr Sharatchandra Th Singh.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Nengpilhing, IQAC coordinator, Immanuel College.
