
Imphal | May 8 : In yet another case of custodial death, a handicapped person died after he was picked up by Imphal East district police commandos in the wee hours today. Following the incident, the Imphal-Ukhrul road was blocked by the angry local people of Itam Nungoi, Yaorabung under Lamlai police station. After holding a public meeting today, the joint action committee formed in this connection demanded the termination of all the police personnel responsible for the death of the person identified as one Th. Ranjit.
According to the family members of the deceased, at around 1 am today, the Imphal East police commandos came looking for Th. Ranjit and left the house after picking up the victim. At around 6 am today, the worried family members went to the Porompat police station but police officers were not available. However, a policeman informed the family members Th Ranjit was fine. At around 10 am the family members went again to the police station only to learn that Ranjit had been admitted to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS). When the family members of Ranjit rushed to the hospital, he was found deposited at the JNIMS morgue, according to the victim's family members.
Family members of Ranjit suspected that he died of torture during interrogation by the police. Th. Ranjit had met with an accident three years ago and ever since, he became invalid. He was earning by engaging in taking tution to school chidren at home. Interestingly, Ranjit was picked up by the police some four months ago on the charge that he had nexus with the PREPAK militants. However, he was released on the same day of the arrest.
