Dimapur, March 3 (MExN): The Environmental Information Awareness Capacity Building & Livelihood Programme (EIACP) of the Nagaland Pollution Control Board in collaboration with the Nagaland Zoological Park (NZP), Rangapahar organized a visit to the NZP, with the Rintaniemei Neighbourhood Children’s Home and JN Aier College on the occasion of World Wildlife Day, March 3.
The event was observed under the theme ‘Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation.
The programme was held at the conference hall of the Director, NZP and started with a PowerPoint presentation on wildlife by Range Forest Officer Watisungla Amer. Amer stressed on the importance of wildlife stating that it brings stability to the environment, and also highlighted their importance in food chains, and the threats faced by the wildlife.
She also added that in order to protect the wildlife in nature, one should refrain from destroying habitats, save water bodies, and do volunteer work. One can resort to eco-friendly products by using jute bags instead of plastic bags, planting more trees, managing our waste, and keeping our surroundings clean, she said while informing the children about the 5Rs of Solid Waste Management- Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Recycle.
I Limatemjen, Principal of JN Aier College talked about the importance of wildlife and how hunting is impacting the environment. He also stressed on the importance of management of garbage or waste, the release stated.
On the occasion, a short speech on the importance of the World Wildlife Day and using the day as an opportunity to celebrate the various forms of wild fauna and fauna in the state of Nagaland, their importance in economic, agricultural, ecological, and social impacts was shared by Khriehunuo Rutsa, Programme Officer, EIACP Nagaland Pollution Control Board.
A short video on a virtual tour of Nagaland Zoological Park was shown to the children. After this, a quiz competition was organized by Vinoto K Rochill, forester-I, NZP.
The programme was chaired by Onenjungshi, NZP wildlife photographer. A total number of 28 children and 2 guardians from Rintaniemei Neighbourhood Children’s Home and 30 final-year students with2 lecturers from JN Aier College along with 7 staff from Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB) attended the programme, the release stated.
As per another release from the NZP, the participants from JN Aier College, Diphupar Dimapur contributed vegetable feedstuffs for the zoo animals, the release stated.
The participants also organized a ‘Plogging’ Drive inside the zoo premises where trash and litters were picked and disposed off in waste bins provided inside the zoo. The Zoo Director Dr C Zupeni Tsanglai, thanked the students for volunteering their services, the release stated.
