Dimapur, November 20 (MExN): Along with the rest of the country, World Toilet Day with the theme ‘Making the invisible visible’ was observed in various parts of Nagaland on November 19.
According to a press release received here on Sunday, the WSSO, PHED Kiphire Division observed the day under the aegis of Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin) at Kiphire and Pungro Blocks.
Er Delimla, JEE, PHED Kiphire in her short address, exhorted people that World Toilet Day is observed to encourage people to contribute towards sanitation for healthier and hygienic lifestyles. People know less about the effects of open defecation where many waterborne diseases affect the population because of improper maintenance of toilets and open defecation, she stated. Asserting that maintaining proper toilet is the first steps towards sanitation, this year's ‘Swachhata Run’ is organized to convey the message to the people to practice the system of twin-pit toilet in every households because it prevents ground water pollution, decrease the spread of diseases, produces useful biomass, boost soil fertility, improve soil structure and it is easy to use, she stated.
The top three winners of Swachhata Run were awarded with cash and certificates.
Earlier the event was chaired by Tsarila L Sangtam, IEC Consultant, WSSO, PHED Kiphire and a pledge taking was initiated by Longtili C Sangtam, Chairman Akedha Amülong, Kiphire.
District Coordinator Limatemsu, thanked the participants for their positive response and for making the programme a success.
The release also stated that the programme at Pungro Block which was held at Pungro village was organized by WWSO,PHED Kiphire. Lenruhtsu from the Pungro Village Students Union urged the participants to be the brand ambassadors in spreading the message of ‘retrofit to twin-pit’ to contribute towards sanitation for sustainable management.
During the Swachhata Run, a pledge was undertaken by the participants and flagging off the Swachhata Run was initiated by Secretary Village Development Board and former footballer player, Azikha Augustine.
The village Head (GB) Rusumeu, gave away the certificate along with cash to the winners of Swachhata Run and the event concludes with pledge-taking.
Can Youth & PHED Dimapur Division
Meanwhile, Can Youth in collaboration with the PHED Dimapur Division organized a programme at Dhansiriphar wherein DWSM, PHED Dimapur, Imojungla Longkumar talked about the purpose of World Toilet Day and elaborated on the importance of maintaining good sanitation.
Engineer Hotolu Sema, JE, PHE- Dhansiripar, Dimapur gave a demo on the Twin-Pit Technology. He also emphasized on maintaining a good toilet for good health and concluded by giving awareness to the children about the importance of washing hands with soap after using the toilet, a press release informed.
Phiju Langthasa, Head GB of Doyapur-cum-Dimasa GB Union President expressed gratitude for organizing such an event like for the Dhansiripar community. He emphasized more on giving awareness to villages by involving the elderly people and maintained that the village’s health and hygiene as a whole is well maintained till date.
Similarly, special guest Asst Commandant Sinulal D, Dimapur Bn, Assam Rifles also appreciated the department for organizing the event and said that whatever demos and awareness have been shared should be adopted in the long run.
This was followed by a Swachhta Pledge led by the special guest and the run was flagged off from Government High School, Dhansiripar Village to Doyapur Village Ground
At the end of the program a painting competition was conducted on the theme of World Toilet Day where 17 children participate. Bipona Langthasa, Tunali and Humjuli bagged the first, second and third positions respectively which were sponsored by the Asst Commandant Sinulal D, Dimapur Bn Assam Rifles, the release stated.
