The number of casualties in road accidents has shown upward trend in Nagaland, an official report informed.
A total of 201 persons were killed and 1420 injured in 2249 road accident from 2018 to 2022 in Nagaland, according to 1st Report on Nagaland Disaster Statistics 2023 published by Directorate of Economics & Statistics, Nagaland.
“Over the years, the proportion of fatal accidents in the total number of road accidents has been consistently increasing, attributed to factors like high speeds, rash driving and drunken driving,” it stated.
In 2018-19, there were 435 road accidents in the state which surged to 894 in 2021-22.
The report, released on October 31, further noted that that the severity of road accident is measured by calculating the number of persons killed per 100 accidents, which was found to be 6.8% for the year 2021-22.
“These statistics underscore the urgency of implementing effective road safety measures and promoting responsible driving habits to curb the escalating toll of road accidents and protect lives on the roads,” the report stated.
Quoting DGP Nagaland office source, the report stated that 44 persons were killed and 348 injured in 435 road accidents during 2018-19 in Nagaland.
A total of 47 persons were killed and 275 injured in 382 road accidents during 2019-20. During 2020-21, 49 persons were killed and 356 injured in 538 road accidents.
During 2021-22, 61 persons were killed and 441 injured in 894 road accidents, the report stated.
83 fire disasters in Nagaland during 2021-22
Meanwhile, the report informed that there were 83 fire disasters during 2021-22, where 78 shops, one hotel and four other commercial buildings were severely damaged across the state.
Among the districts, the report stated that Dimapur registered the highest number of fire incidents with 35 shops, one hotel and three commercial buildings being destroyed.
Peren occupied 2nd highest at 18, followed by Tuensang-17, Zunheboto- 5, Mon- 3 and Mokokchung - 1.
“The data highlights the significant impact of fire accidents on commercial properties and emphasizes the importance of fire safety measures and preparedness to safeguard businesses and communities from such disasters,” the report stated.
