In Nagaland about 22.4% women and men 28.47% have been diagnosed with high blood pressure and taking medication while 9.3% women and 11.9% are on diabetic medication as per the National Family Health Survey 2019-20.
This data was shared by Managing Director, KOHIMAS hospital, Dr Keneilhoulie Medom during a free health camp organised by the Chandmari Gorkha Union and Kripa Foundation, Nagaland at the Multi Utility hall, GPPK, Complex Chandmari on July 8.
Observing the prevailing Naga society, Dr. Medom said lifestyle modification disease has become common among the citizens giving rise to diseases such as hyper tension, diabetes and cancer over the years.
Attributing the Naga daily food habit of pork and rice as the main culprit, Dr Medom encouraged Nagas to go for regular check-ups of their health and to make health a priority among all other things.
Highlighting in brief the 'basic of HIV/AIDS," Ainato Yeptho said the rate of HIV prevalence has increased over the years as Nagaland stands second in high prevalence of HIV/AIDS.
With 90% of the transmission through sexual route, pregnant women were asked to take medication to avoid transmission to their progeny.
Also with the high rise of substance abuse in the state, Yeptho shared concerns on the sharing of needles among the injecting drugs users, which he asserted have to be stopped.
Giving the current status, he informed that there are approximate 12,300 people are under medication of HIV/AIDS.
He also informed that there has been a 2% increase of HIV in every test, and substantiating this, he said 199 were tested positive for HIV out of 10,000 tests in Dimapur in the month of April and May, while 54 were tested positive in Kohima out of 3900 tests. 60% of the infected were between the age group of 15-34 years, he further informed.
Yeptho also spoke on the preventive measures, including taking proper medication and usage of condoms.
The health camp programme was supported by MLA, Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhütso, Gorkha Public Panchayat, UPHC Porterlane, Sun Pharma, NSACS and Department of Health and Family Welfare. The health camp was followed by door to door visit of elders around the locality.
