Increased dengue vector density in Dimapur

NVBDCP appeals for caution

Dimapur, August 6 (MExN): An entomological study on dengue vector density or mosquito population has revealed that there is high risk of dengue transmission in Dimapur district where the mosquito population is very high.

The study was conducted in various localities in Dimapur, Kohima, Wokha, and Mokokchung during Anti-Dengue month which is observed every year in the month of July, according to Dr Neisakho Kere, Joint Director and State Programme Officer for National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) in Nagaland.

Noting the high vector density in the localities where the survey was conducted in Dimapur, Dr Kere said that the current monsoon rains are adding to the growing population, as mosquitoes thrive in areas with standing water.

In this regard, the NVBDCP programme appealed to the public across the state to take precautions and remove stagnant water from all the containers around the house like flower pot bases, empty vessels, coolers, tyres, buckets, etc., once a week to discourage breeding of mosquitoes. It also advised the public to keep all water filled vessels and tanks tightly covered and to throw out any rubbish like plastic cups, old containers, tyres, coconut shells etc., around the compound every week.

It also appealed the public, especially pregnant women and children, to sleep under mosquito nets during day and night time and to immediately consult a doctor in case of high fever.
