Indefinite road blockade against Nagaland from today

Local youths from Mariani in Assam assaulted by Nagaland Police team: Reports

DIMAPUR, JUNE 10 (MExN):  The Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has called for an indefinite road blockade against Nagaland bound vehicles with effect from 6 am tomorrow. This was informed in a press note issued by Er. Temsu Wathi Ao, Coordinator, Border Peace Coordination Committee (Assam-Nagaland).

According to the press note, the blockade is being imposed due to some altercation between road users and personnels belonging to Nagaland Armed Police (NAP) convoy at Mariani on June 5 last, where three youths namely Sanjiv Gogoi, Nayan Dutta and Pushpa Gogoi were reportedly manhandled and assaulted by the NAP team at about 9.30 pm travelling from Mokokchung towards Dimapur.

As per reports available, Sanjiv Gogoi, who is the local office bearer of the Mariani AJYCP, while he was returning to his home, his motor bike got punctured near Mariani college and his other friends nearby were helping to push his bike to a safer place from the road. In the meantime, it is reported that the police convoy was made to wait which might have triggered anger and few jawans travelling in a bus vide vehicle registration No. NL-11-1132 assaulted and manhandled the youth and sped away towards Titabor. Though the victims immediately reported the matter to the police, it has been alleged that the Police at Titabor could not stop the accused vehicle from the convoy.

The student’s organisation demanded to the authority concern to arrest the culprit and to book as per the law giving dateline as June 9. An FIR also has been lodged at Mariani Police Station on the same night.

Seeing no response from the authority concern, they have decided to impose total road blockade initially at Mariani point (Phase-I) from tomorrow till such time their demand is fulfilled. It is learnt that if the authority does not respond to their demand within a day or two, the jurisdiction will cover all road leading to Nagaland state.

Road users from Nagaland are advised not to travel through Mariani-Titabor road at the moment.
