Indian mobile application makers raking the moolah globally

New Delhi, January 9 (Agencies): The world over BlackBerry was the undisputed leader in smartphones. It still is, but with some serious competition from players who took the idea of smartphones from just work to play. Now as the battle for smartphones and tablets plays out across the world, some unknown but pivotal players are working for major manufacturers like RIM (Research in Motion) and other platforms and creating apps. Apps, or mobile applications, have become an important criterion on which the buyer decides which phone to buy, and more importantly, which one to recommend.
Indian app-makers are proving their mettle. Take Sourcebits, for example. It took them just three months to develop an app, commercialising it and earn a million bucks. Popular apps are usually listed in the top 100 of the iPhone App Store and value around Rs 50 lakh in income, says Rohit Singal, director, Sourcebits, which is being touted as one of the most successful emerging companies in the space.
What is even better is that this revenue comes from apps priced at just $1-2, all within months. For the free ones, it might take around six months, as the earnings comes mainly from advertisements in the app. For RapidSoft, being ranked in the top 10 at the BlackBerry App Development was clearly an achievement after starting out from scratch. The core expertise of the company lies in developing Java-based applications for Blackberry Smartphones, which are then sold under the brand of the firm RapidSoft signs the contract with.
