Main feature on introduction of semester system in undergraduate level in Nagaland University beginning from 2012

As per directives of UGC, Nagaland University is carefully developing a standard course curriculum and syllabus involving all the Boards of Undergraduate Studies (BUGS) to introduce Semester System in affiliated colleges beginning from 2012 academic session. It is expected that this will make the students highly productive and confident in this competitive world where both students and teachers will have to work much harder than before. The main features these programme are as follows: -
1.    Replacement of old traditional system of annual examination by semester system in phase manner following continuous process of evaluation,
2.    Duration –three years, six semesters i.e. two semesters per one academic year giving a maximum grace period of two more years i.e. 5 academic years but not more than 10 semesters for repeaters/improvement,
3.    Credit system- i.e. a minimum of 120 Credits for Honors and 90 Credits for pass course,  
4.    Hard working students can earn more Credit to their advantages apart from minimum Credits 120/90 Credits for which college will have to create additional facilities,  
5.    Total numbers of papers for Honors = 8+ 6 = 14, i.e. 8 Honors papers or (7+ 1 project) (optional) and 6 compulsory papers carrying 100 marks each i.e. 1400 marks. For Pass course 6 compulsory common papers and another 6 optional papers carrying 100 marks each i.e. 1200 marks.
6.    Seven Points Grading System which is the most popular grading system  to be followed,
7.    Assessment method- 70 marks external evaluation and 30 marks internal evaluation,
8.    Freedom is given to the respective colleges to devise internal assessment of 30 marks according suitability of the concerned college comprising unit test, assignment, seminar, quizzes, case study, open book test, projects, tutorial, debate, group learning, personality test, etc.
9.    The nature of questions will be of both essay and objective types covering the entire units,   
10.    Minimum pass marks- 40% both in internal and external assessment, i.e.12 marks out of 30 marks in internal assessment and 28 marks in end semester exam to be secured. No student will be allowed to appear end semester Exam unless he/she secures 40% in internal assessment and securing 75% class attendance.
11.    A given subject is divided into 5 units uniformly allotting 14 marks per unit in each of the subject with little exception in English and Tenydie.
12.    Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) is introduced according to available of facilities in a given college. Freedom is given to the respective colleges to introduce CBCS/Certificate/Diploma courses for the benefit of the students identifying the most appropriate vocational courses for which Certificate/Diploma will be given by University in addition to normal degree.  
13.    For Vocation subjects, 50 marks in theory and 50 marks in practical is proposed.
14.    Introduction of Contact Hour corresponding to Credit Value will be introduced. For example a paper having 4 Credit should have a minimum of 4 contact hours in a week or a paper having 3 credit should have a minimum of 3 contact hours in a week.1 contact hour = 1 one hour  per period.
15.    Coding/serialization of subjects start from 100 series in undergraduate, 200 series in postgraduate,300 series in M.Phil. and 400 series for Ph. D. programme that can be revised in BPGS level accordingly,
16.    List of reading materials have already changed
 
Note: Subject to approval by Academic Council, course curriculum and syllabus pertaining to every department/subject prepared by respective Boards of Undergraduate Studies will be available in NU website from the third week of September, 2011. Constructive suggestion/comments are invited.
