Under the theme ‘Integrating Science and Skills,' the Patkai Christian College (Autonomous) organised its ‘Science Exhibition 2022’ at the college’s Science Complex on October 7.

One of the objectives of the exhibition was the transformation of theoretical knowledge into practical usages which would benefit the society as a whole, an organiser explained.

All together, 50 models were displayed as students competed to producing the best prototype for practical application or presented models wiith elaborate explanation of scientific matters.

It ranged from topical topic like climate change, sustainable city and ‘smart dustbin’ to explanation of human anatomy and botanical matters to playing with numbers and computer science.

Among others, students from Holy Cross Higher Secondary School, Livingstone Foundation International School, Bethel Faith School, North Town Higher Secondary School and Patkai Higher Secondary School attended the exhibition.

Giving his keynote address at the inaugural programme,  PCC Principal Dr Thepfuvilie Pierü highlighted how different scientists from Thomas Alva Edison to Wright Brothers and  Alexander Graham Bell to CV Raman  and Madam Curie’s researches and inventions have benefited the human society.

“As students of science, the question before us is, can you join such unique performers of scientific history?  Definitely, you can,” he said.   To this end, he exhorted the students with Late Dr APJ Abddul Kalam’s call for continuously acquiring knowledge, working hard and perseverance.

Dr Pierü further noted that Science has given to the society the simple but important things often taken for granted.

“Science has surprised us with many inventions and discoveries and that will continue to be surprising in the future,” he said, adding that it generates solutions for everyday life and answers the great mysteries of the universe.

However, Dr Pierü noted that there are still many areas where science can help the humans and challenged the students “to think afresh, make a commitment to become a great scientist and be a blessing to the people through new discoveries and inventions.”

Dwelling on 'Integrating Science and Skills', Chief Guest Dr Themrichon Tuithung, Professor Department of Computer Science and Engineering, National Institute of Technology (NIT) Nagaland noted that “Science is the process for finding the truth and it requires honesty and sincerity.’

Skills on the other hand, are what ‘students use from they already know, learnt and construct new understanding and using different strategies and approaches, she said.

Prof Tuithung also highlighted on how advancement in science and technology have made life more comfortable and how these enable completely different form of experiences among the people.

Automation, Artificial intelligence and internets of things have people work smarter, she added.

Prof Tuithung also expressed hope that the science exhibition would help motivate the young minds explore further and integrate their learning into skills.

Meanwhile, the results for the exhibition were yet to be announced at the filing of this report and it would be declared later.
