International Day for Biodiversity 2024 observed at NU

The Centre for Biodiversity Studies & Department of Botany Nagaland University observed the International Day for Biodiversity 2024 on May 22 at the university Lumami campus on May 22 with clarion call upon all stakeholders to support the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Lumami, May 26 (MExN): The Centre for Biodiversity Studies & Department of Botany, Nagaland University (NU) observed the International Day for Biodiversity 2024 on May 22. 

At the event, Dr Viheno Iralu, Assistant Professor at the centre, emphasised the importance of preserving biodiversity, urging for individual and collective action in line with this year's theme, "Be Part of the Plan." 

Highlighting Nagaland's rich biodiversity, she addressed the alarming decline in forest cover from 80.50% in 2015 to 73% in 2021, as reported by the Indian State of Forest Report (ISFR) and stressed the role of educational institutions to address the challenges via research, education, and community engagement, focusing on sustainable practices and conservation policies. 

Chief guest  & NU VC Prof Patnaik urged young researchers and students to protect Nagaland's natural heritage. 

He reflected on the historical relationship between the Nagas and their environment, highlighting the traditional harmony with the region's biodiversity. However, he noted the adverse effects of illegal mining activities, causing severe harm to local ecosystems. 

Prof Patnaik encouraged youth to acknowledge the state's rich biodiversity and capitalize on it sustainably, emphasizing the importance of ecological balance for future generations' well-being.

Theme speaker, Prof Joginder Singh Panwar discussed biodiversity's crucial role in ecosystem productivity and emphasised its significance in medical discoveries, economic development, and climate change adaptation. 

He called upon stakeholders to support the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, stressing the impact of individual and collective actions in halting biodiversity loss.

The programme also saw the release of three books, one edited by Prof CR Deb, Prof. Talijungla, and Dr Neizo Puro, along with two books co-authored by Prof Panwar.
