Kohima, August 20 (MExN): International Organisation for Human Rights Protection (IOHRP), Nagaland Branch has questioned the Government of India over its imposition of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and Disturbed Area Act (DAA) in entire Nagaland State.
A press release from IOHRP Nagaland Branch Convenor A Kaghoto Assumi questioned why AFSPA has been implemented in entire Nagaland State when GoI is well aware that Indo-Naga peace talks is underway in full swing.
Pointing out that Nagaland is very peaceful in comparison to other Northeastern states, IOHRP asked what the logic was behind the imposition of such an “inhuman” Act towards Nagas.
The release further queried whether the Government of India really care about the recent Supreme Court’s verdict on AFSPA.
“There is no place for using AFSPA in this 21st century as the shield to kill the innocent children/innocent citizen,” it asserted, adding action should be taken against the accused.
The organization further questioned why the GoI has empowered their armies to “terrorize” the innocent Nagas.
The act of GoI towards the Nagas, it stated, clearly indicates that Nagas are not a part of India. “We need transparency over all the inhuman acts. If not what is the reason behind this imposition?” it questioned
The release further questioned why the GoI is not giving any response to the core organizations of Nagaland even after the protest rally carried out on August 11 against AFSPA/DAA followed by memorandum sent to the Prime Minister of India through the Governor and Chief Minister of Nagaland.
IOHRP asked the GoI to give direct and positive response to the questions raised above at the earliest through print and electronic media.
Meanwhile, the organization lauded the frontal organizations of Nagaland who are against the Acts and encouraged all the organizations to protest the Acts. It also called upon the human rights activists to co-operate with them. The state Government was also urged to join hands through letter and spirit to eradicate the Acts at the earliest.
