IRCSW Wokha marks Red Cross Day

The Indian Red Cross Society, Wokha District Branch (IRCSW), commemorated World Red Cross Day at Deputy Commissioner’s conference hall, under the global theme ‘On the Side of Humanity’ on May 8, 2025. 

Presiding over the occasion, Vineet Kumar, Deputy Commissioner and President of IRCSW, welcomed and congratulated newly inducted members of the Society. He also paid tribute to the contributions of past members, recognising their dedicated service to humanitarian causes. In his address, Kumar provided an in-depth overview of the Red Cross Society’s mission, underscoring its enduring commitment to humanitarian service and societal welfare.

The keynote address was delivered by Seyielenuo Mezhii, District & Sessions Judge Wokha, where she emphasised on the history and global significance of the Red Cross and the importance of its annual observance. She also highlighted the organisation’s vital role in promoting human welfare, social equity, and inclusivity. Drawing from India’s constitutional values, she spoke on how the Red Cross aligns with the fundamental rights and directive principles of state policy. She also reflected on the congruence between Red Cross principles and Christian teachings, reinforcing its ethos of service, compassion, and selflessness.

Dr K Z Ovung, Honorary Secretary presented the Activity Report for the year 2024–2025, detailing the Society’s outreach initiatives. These included relief efforts for victims of landslides and fires, support extended to orphanages and hospitals, and assistance rendered to selected villages across Wokha District through the provision of essential materials and financial aid.

The Search Committee’s report was presented by Convenor Dr Jonsuthung Kithan, after which newly appointed office bearers were formally introduced. Nzano P. Kikon was announced as the new Honorary Secretary, while Dr Nchumbemo Ezung assumed the role of Treasurer. The programme was led by Orenvungo Humtsoe with a cultural performance by students of Perennial School, Wokha. It concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr Nchumbemo Ezung.
