Ishrat Jehan encounter was fake: SIT member

Gandhinagar, January 28 (Agencies): In a dramatic development in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case, Ahmedabad Joint Commissioner Satish Verma and member of the Special Investigating (SIT) team probing the case claimed on Friday that the encounter was staged. Satish Verma has filed a 75 page affidavit affidavit in Gujarat High Court today, in which he has alleged that some other members of the SIT did not cooperate in the probe and that they tried to derail the probe. He accused SIT chairman Karnail Singh and a Delhi cop of tampering the investigation.
Verma also claimed that as per the recorded statements of witnesses, the encounter was fake. The affidavit also states that no protection was been given to witnesses, which further fears them coming out in open and speak the truth. In his affidavit the Jt Commissioner has also alleged that the suspended DIG DG Vanzara is also linked to the Ishrat Jahan encounter case. Vanazara is also an accused in the encounter killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in November 2005 and is currently in prison.
The affidavit says Ishrat and others were kept in the same guest house for 4 days where Sohrabuddin and his wife were confined. They were later blindfolded and moved out in a blue Indica car and shot dead. Verma had earlier filed an affidavit complaining about the approach of Karnal Singh. A Gujarat police team had gunned down Mumbai-based Ishrat along with three on June 15, 2004.
