It is not uncommon for asphalt roads to incur wear and tear following prolonged exposure to the elements and vehicular traffic. And it is also quite rare for freshly tarred roads to come off after a couple of days.
The latter description played out today in Dimapur as sections of recently “carpeted” roads literally bled under the sun.
Melting asphalt film on the road surface was spotted in quite a few locations at the Duncan Basti and Kuda (formerly Nagarjan) roads as the sun chose to shine bright on Monday.
The said roads were repaired only a few days back as pledged by the freshly instated PDA government when it took the reins in March this year. The PDA government had promised to repair and renovate all major roads in the district headquarters of the state within 60 days of coming to power.
The PWD (Roads & Bridges), the nodal department responsible for the promised government initiative, attributed the melting of the freshly repaired roads to excess use of bitumen.
“Bitumen bleeding” in technical lingo, the Road & Bridges Divisional Engineer, Dimapur, when contacted said that such premature erosion happens when too much bitumen is used in the mixture. Stating that they have taken note of the anomaly, the official said it will be taken care of. In road engineering, this can happen when bitumen used in excess and further compounded by hot weather conditions.
