Jalukie Govt lands falls prey to the encroachment disease

Masangam

Peren, July 6 (MExN): Reacting to the random and rampant encroachment on allotted government-departmental lands in and around Jalukie, the people of the area have expressed serious apprehensions over the illegal activities. According to sources from the Department of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry,  expressing their ire at the unscrupulous individual encroachers, disclosed that out of 1030 acres of land allotted for the department,  some 250 acres or more have  already been encroached upon beginning from year 1997  leaving only a meager portion of the entire land left for the expansion of the department's developmental activities.

Displeasure was also expressed over what was observed as lackadaisical treatment towards the department since its establishment in 1973 that even the long-constructed animal sheds, staff quarters and feeding and watering troughs are in silent ruin. However, according to a directorial team which visited Jalukie recently, Jalukie and Medziphema are the only areas with spacious areas for development and was observed that centrally-sponsored schemes of the department, which are in the offing, would be implemented in the two towns.

Besides, it has also come to notice that small gaps of lands lying adjacent to governmental offices and staff  quarters are being taken advantage of by selfish individuals through illegal encroachment in and around the district.

In the meantime, concerned citizens are raising queries as to what is the purpose of reserving huge portion of lands without any developmental activities taking place and instead, allowing it to be devoured by greedy unscrupulous elements. M Hieka, President of Jalukie Students’ Union has urged the heads of departments of the district that the prevailing encroachment, which is anathema to development, are taking place in the face of the government’s apathy and negligence.

The student leader fervently urged the HoDs and concern civil administration to take urgent measures in allotting deserving penalties to the culprits according to the law of the land. Hieka was of the opinion that the administration should work in ‘tandem with government policies’ in the right earnest.
