Nagaland, which is considered one of the highest importers as well as consumers of pork, will soon be having a pig breeding farm in Jalukie under Peren district, with active German and English technology. This is expected to be functional by this year end.
Interacting with a section of mediapersons at his office chambers at Civil Secretariat Kohima, Minister for Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, T R Zeliang, said there are a good number of government-run piggeries in almost all the districts. However, they are only demonstration farms and not productive and they have also become a liability. Maintaining that Nagas are fond of pork which is the best delicacy in almost every kitchen, he said Nagas need to be self sufficient in meat production to elevate its economic status.
With a view to be self-sufficient in pork production, a swine breeding farm with technology from Germany and UK in Jalukie will be set up at an estimated cost of 150 crore. The Detailed Project Report is under preparation and registration is under process for the breeding farm spread over 400 acres of land with 100 percent German, UK species, hi-tech and artificial insemination facilities. It is expected to start functioning by this year end, he said. “We can dream that after 3 years, we can have sufficient meat in Nagaland,” Zeliang quipped.
The Minister also disclosed that a veterinary college is also in the offing in the same complex. Likewise, a hi-tech slaughter house at Khopanala in Dimapur, attached with a meat processing unit has also been approved by the state cabinet. The department is trying to streamline the abattoir system to meet requirements of consumers and also maintain hygiene, he said. The slaughter house project would be on trial basis and if successful it would implemented in other districts, Zeliang informed. He added that the state government is also contemplating a Mithun breeding project.
