National People’s Party (NPP) working president James P K Sangma today graced the 30th Wrestling Championship 2026 of the Chakhesang Wrestling Association (CWA) at Pfutsero in Phek district.
Speaking at the event, Sangma, also president of Meghalaya Cricket Association, described Naga-style wrestling—locally called Künii among the Chakhesang—as a living repository of cultural heritage and values. He termed it a “game of brotherhood,” where wrestlers address opponents as Khrietho-o (beloved friend), representing their villages, families and traditions.
He praised notable Chakhesang athletes, including Venuzo Dawhuo, Huluyi D Vadeo, Thuputha Hesuh, Vethozo Lohe, and Venu Vadeo, for their national and international achievements. Highlighting Chekrovolü Swüro, the second Naga Olympian in archery, and martial artist Yoto Chizo, Sangma said the community’s strength extends across sports.
Commending CWA for substantial prize money—including Rs. 2.5 lakh for the senior champion—he urged wrestlers to compete with honour, discipline and sportsmanship, while exploring allied sports like Judo, Belt Wrestling and Freestyle Wrestling.
Referring to his father’s 2000 visit to Porba village during the Chakhesang Students Union general conference, Sangma said the championship celebrates heritage, strengthens community bonds, and inspires youth to preserve tradition while embracing progress.
