June 26 is ‘Int’l Day against Drug Abuse & illicit trafficking’

Dimapur, June 25 (MExN): The Nagaland State Excise department will be joining the globe in commemorating the ‘International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit trafficking’, observed on June 26, which serves as a reminder of the need to combat the problems to society posed by illicit drugs. 

The United Nations’ (UN) International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking falls on June 26 each year to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society. Individuals, communities and various organizations all over the world support this day.

Commissioner of Excise, Maongwati Aier said that the Nagaland State Excise department, responsible for “supply reduction” of drugs, is keeping strict vigil round the clock to check illegal trafficking of drugs in the State with all its available resources.

The Commissioner of Excise in a press release has appealed and urged the people of the state and all organisation, NGOs working in the field to put a concerted effort to eradicate this dreaded drug menace from our midst and affirm, resolve. He also appeals to “make declare pledge not to habrour any drug traffickers or peddles in any form directly or indirectly, but to report any incident of commission of offence under NDPS Act taking place or likely to place in your locality or neighbourhood, immediately to the Excise department.”

In Kohima, a state level programme will be conducted under the theme ‘Make health your “new high” in life not drugs.’ Parliamentary secretary for Labour & Employment Law & Justice and Land Revenue Dr. Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire will grace the occasion as the chief guest. The function will be held at the Kohima Local Ground at 2:00 pm under the aegis of Nagaland Users’ Network with N-NagaDao, Kohima Users’ Network and Nagaland State AIDS Control Society. Significance of the day will be briefed by Bazo Kire, secretary, N-NagaDao while Neiba Zumvii, president Nagaland Users’ Network, will deliver welcome address while it will be hosted by Emma S. Yepthomi. The programme will be followed by exhibition between Kohima Komets and Nagaland Users’ Network.
