KDLSA provides assistance to five UTPs for free and fair trial

Kohima, July 30 (MExN): Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) conducted legal awareness camp for prisoners at District Jail, Kohima led by Panel Lawyer Imsentila and Mhechiete along with Para Legal Volunteer, Teisi Thou, Jailor on July 27. 

Altogether, 54 Under Trial Prisoners (UTPs) and eight convicts were present during the awareness camp, a press release from NSLSA stated. Legal Services Act and prisoners right for free legal aid were emphasized during the visit.

The team identified five unrepresented UTPs who were unable to engage private counsel and interaction was held with them. As such, the team forwarded application for legal aid for perusal of their case and further course of action, it stated. 

It may be mentioned that access to court and legal facilities is essential for giving a free and fair trial to these inmates, which is the mandate of Article 21 of the Constitution.
