The office of the Dhansiri River Flood Control Board (DRFCB) was inaugurated today by the Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur, Maongwati Aier at the SBI Purana Bazar branch building. In his speech, the DC said that this office was first of its kind in the State and continued that the board will be able to highlight and control the problems related to the river.
Citing the example of the Brahmaputra Flood Control Board of Assam, Maongwati opined that DRFCB can also serve people affected by the river. However, he reminded that the office bearers and members should dedicate their time since it is a major task.
Continuing that Dhansiri River has five tributaries, Aier pointed out that the nearby villages and colonies of the river face frequent floods which need preventive measure and proper care. He also said that the board should be included as the ex-officio member of the Dimapur District Planning Board. Referring to the pollutant in Dhansiri River, the DC said throwing garbage, carcasses etc. should be avoided in the river since people drink the water. “Dhansiri River is like life for all of us,” he said, adding, “Keep Dhansiri as fresh and clean as possible.”
Comparing Dhansiri River to the Nile of Egypt, the DC expressed his hope that villages and colonies situated near the river will also be developed and people will be able to earn their livelihood.
Hokheto Kiba, Chairman of the board, in his welcome address, said that the board has been formed to check and control pollution of Dhansiri River and continued that to contain soil erosion caused by heavy flooding. He maintained that the board will also coordinate with various departments and agencies for flood control. Kiba said that the board will assist the administration and public in times of flood and other emergencies.
