Zhavame Students Union assists farmers

Dimapur, June 14 (MExN): The Zhavame Students’ Union provided free labor service on June 13, by extending help to 15 families at Zhavame village under Phek District.

According to a press release, the initiative was undertaken with the aim to “keep the tradition of our forefather’s goodwill of extending help to those who haven’t completed the transplanting of paddy saplings to the terrace field.”

The season of transplanting paddy saplings to the terrace field is considered one of the toughest or most enduring of all seasons for a farmer, the release said.

Almost a month has passed since this arduous season began and the toll of working tirelessly in the paddy field has started to wean some farmers, it added.

Stating that it is mostly the elderly people, the widows, or spinsters who would take time to finish with their paddy fields, the Union informed that a few senior students together with the executives of the Students’ Union decided to carry the tradition of helping those in need with their paddy fields and were able to assist 15 families in total.

The ZSU team of 34 students took part in the initiative which was led by VDB Secretary and Ex-President Tho-o Shupao, a host of other Ex-Presidents, young students and a few youth too joined the group.

“For many students this was the first time of working so hard and so long,” the Union said. The unforeseen situation of COVID-19 lockdown has been an eye opener for the students, sharing the experience of the farmers who toil in the fields to send them to towns for their education, it added.

The Village Chairman of Zhavame village expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the Union for the work. He further complimented the youth of Christo Naga’s Club who had carried a similar initiative on June 12 by assisting 7 families.

The President of Zhavame Union Kohima also expressed gratitude and said that “compassion brings peace and harmony to both the giver and the receiver.”

He further appealed to the youngsters to broaden their outlook, which will bring unity, development and prosperity.
