MLA Khriehu Liezietsu, chairman Kohima DPDB and advisor New and Renewable Energy and Music Task Force today asserted that the progress of human civilization depends on the advancement of science and technology.

Speaking at the Kohima District Level National Science Day Celebration at Multi Purpose Hall of Government Higher Secondary School here, Khriehu said the theme of the celebration “Genetically modified crops and food security” is an important area of advancement in food production technology. “With the rise in population and the ever increasing demand for food, this technology has resulted in producing better yield with more desirable nutritious value,” he said. He said the day, which is being observed to mark the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ by Chandrasekhar Venkata Raman a prominent Indian Scientist, should be an inspiration for all to contribute for the society in the field of science.

Taking the opportunity he also shared about his NRE Department stating that it is involved in the development of alternative sources of energy like solar, hydro, biomass etc. The development of these sources of energy is becoming important because other natural sources of energy like coal, petroleum and natural gas are running out and becoming more and more expensive, he said.

Khriehu also maintained that since burning of coal and petroleum products contribute to climate change and global warming which is dangerous for the existence of life on earth, it is also important to find new ways to minimize its effect. The aim of the NRE department is to harness green and clean renewable energy sources in the state for energy security, socio-economic and environmental benefits. In this, he said, the role of students is very important because with the right knowledge, we can also harness our own natural resources. Secretary Science & Technology, CK Nihekhu Sema also graced the occasion as guest of honour.

Meanwhile, a painting competition on the theme of the celebration was also held wherein Sashikaba of Stella Higher Secondary School was adjudged the first position winner while Aosangla of Little Flower HSS and Graceson of Government HSS were placed second and third.
