'Make conscious effort to learn & preserve culture'
Kohima, February 9 (MExN): Kohima College celebrated its 50th cultural day cum prize distribution at its auditorium with Menuokholie Kire, Joint Director, Directorate of Higher Education as the chief guest on February 9.
The chief guest, Menuokholie, who is an alumnus of KCK, in his speech, applauded the college for continuing to uphold this tradition of celebrating Cultural Day for the last 50 years. He stated that as culture is learned and not inborn, one has to make a conscious effort to learn and preserve our culture, especially now that it is a fast-changing world, and there are time-constraints and influence of bigger and more popular cultures. He encouraged the teachers and student community of KCK to pass on this practice of preserving our culture by celebrating such occasions and urged them to organise seminars on cultural awareness.
Dr. Watijungshi Jamir, Principal KCK, who spoke on the diversity and richness of the Naga culture in his welcome address, said that the NE is considered a laboratory of ethnic studies for social scientists. He highlighted the significance of the details in the Naga tribal attires, and of monoliths which could only be erected in honour of persons who gave a series of feasts of merit. He also encouraged the students to preserve and protect our rich Naga culture, and thanked the chief guest, faculty, staff, student bodies and especially the media houses for regular coverage of all college events.
The programme was chaired by Rhothsüvi, Social and Cultural Secretary, KCK with an invocation by Ase Yale, Asst. Professor. Cultural Presentations included a Folk song by the students from Chakesang Tribe and an Indigenous Game by the Sumi Tribe. Haose Khiamniungan, President, Evangelical Union, KCK presented a report on the achievements of the EU during the 2017-18 tenure. The prize distribution for the winners of the various activities during the College Week held in December, 2017 was announced by Kuoshuvo, Literary and Magazine Secretary, KCK, and a vote of thanks was pronounced by Kesenlo Kath, Asst. Social and Cultural Secretary, KCK.
Mass Media Cell, Kohima College in a press release stated that the students of the Functional English Dept. presented a special number in the form of a Spoken Word Poetry titled "Youth Culture: In Search of Ourselves", that stressed on the need to create a more positive, less destructive world for today's youth; to recreate a culture that is based on mutual respect and unity in the form of art, written by Dr. Neikehienuo Mepfü-o, Asst. Professor, Deptartment of Functional English, KCK.
