Kohima, August 2 (MExN): Kohima College on Saturday celebrated its 57th Freshers' Day under the theme "New Beginnings, Endless Possibilities", welcoming 779 newly admitted students and encouraging them to develop skills, leadership qualities and social responsibility.
The programme, held at the college courtyard, was chaired by third-semester student Kekhrievor Dzüvichü and began with an invocation by Students' Christian Fellowship (SCF) President Liyani Lotha. Faculty members and students attended the event.
Principal Dr Vitsosie Vüpru welcomed the freshers and encouraged them to make full use of the facilities available at the college while striving to become responsible citizens.
The gathering was also addressed by All Nagaland College Students' Union (ANCSU) President Kivika Yeptho.
As part of the programme, the newly elected Kohima College Students' Council (KCSC) executive for the 2026-27 session was inducted by Medoseno Thapo, Assistant Professor and Secretary of the Student Welfare Committee.
Outgoing KCSC General Secretary Yeshika Achumi presented the annual report, congratulated the new executive members and formally handed over charge to the newly elected General Secretary, Wati Lkr, who pledged to serve with humility, sincerity, accountability and efficiency.
The event also featured a special performance by Ketouzo Sopfünuo of the Tenyidie Department and a speech on behalf of the freshers by Semurayi Swuro of the Education Department.
Advisor for School Education, Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, who attended as the chief guest, spoke on the aspirations and potential of Generation Z, stressing the importance of adaptability, skill development and systems thinking in the 21st century.
He encouraged students to become socially responsible leaders, engage with contemporary issues and use information purposefully. Pointing to the limited availability of government jobs, Yhome urged students to explore entrepreneurship and career opportunities beyond the state.
He also called on students to preserve their cultural identity, create lasting legacies, embrace diversity and contribute meaningfully to society.
The programme concluded with the crowning of Kesanelie of the Political Science Department as Mr Freshers Kohima College 2026 and Lochumlo of the History Department as Miss Freshers Kohima College 2026, followed by a vote of thanks, benediction and refreshments.
