Kohima gets new Outdoor Fitness Gym under ‘Iconic Project’

Bringing cheers to the health conscious citizens of Kohima city, MLA Dr Tseilhoutuo (Ato) Rhutso inaugurated Outdoor Fitness Gym at Officers’ Hill along Raj Bhavan Road, Kohima on May 7.

Constructed under ‘Iconic Project’ of Local Area Development Programme (LADP) 2024-25, this project was dedicated to the citizens of Kohima town, marking a significant step toward promoting health and community well-being in Kohima.

Addressing the inaugural ceremony, Dr. Ato, who represents 9th Kohima Town A/C to Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) emphasized that the facility belongs to the people, encouraging everyone to use it and take ownership of its upkeep. “This space is for all young and old, and will benefit every individual who chooses to stay active and healthy,” he said.

He informed that similar gym activities has also been installed at the Mental Hospital in Aradura, Kohima underscoring the importance of supporting mental health infrastructure with dignity and encouraging physical well-being for patients.

Also speaking at the inaugural programme, Kohima Deputy Commissioner B Henok Buchem expressed appreciation for the initiative and called for greater civic engagement and collective responsibility in making Kohima a cleaner, healthier, progressive town.

Buchem emphasized that the gym is strategically located in one of the busiest public spaces in the city, frequently visited by people of all ages, especially during morning and evening hours. “Health is wealth and this project is a step in the right direction in helping citizens take care of their well-being,” he added.

Asserting that ‘Kohima is our town, our responsibility’, the DC urged the gathering to do the part to keep it clean, healthy, and peaceful. He said gym is a community space, and its success depends on how we care for and use it, and thanked the MLA and the Iconic Project Committee for this thoughtful initiative and look forward to many more such impactful projects that set a benchmark for other districts to follow.

The programme was chaired by Dr. Keviseto Kintso while vote of thanks was proposed by Azo Khemio, youth president, Officers’ Hill, Kohima.

The outdoor gym is located below Kohima Law College and is open to all members of the public for use.
