KOHIMA, SEPTEMBER 7 (MExN): The 1st Nagaland Masters Table Tennis Championship, organised under the aegis of the Nagaland Masters Table Tennis Association (NMTTA) and the Nagaland Table Tennis Association (NTTA), concluded here on September 6.
The two-day event, held from September 5–6, saw participation from seven districts of the state, with 44 veterans competing in the team championship as well as individual categories. The ‘Masters’ category in table tennis comprises players aged 40 years and above. In the team events, Kohima district emerged as the champion in the 40+ men’s category, while Meluri district clinched the 50+ men’s team title.
On the opening day, special guest Kevithuto Sophie, IPS, urged participants to maintain good health and fitness through sports to prevent lifestyle-related ailments. Recalling his days in table tennis during the late 1970s, he stressed that an idle mind was a “devil’s workshop” and encouraged the players to remain engaged in healthy activities.
On the second day, guest of honour Kovi Meyase, NCS, lauded the organisers for the smooth conduct of the tournament and said Masters Associations played a key role in promoting the sport across districts. He noted that Nagas were naturally gifted and suited to physical sports like table tennis, and expressed hope that the winners would excel at the upcoming North East Masters Championship to be held in Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh.
