Kohima Law College, NVCO celebrates women’s day

Kohima, March 7 (MExN): Kohima Law College (KLC) and Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) observed International Women’s Day on March 7. It was observed on the ‘Digit ALL-Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality’ and also as part of NVCO’s two weeklong celebration of World Consumer Rights Day.

In a press release, NVCO President & KLC Associate Professor, Kezhokhoto Savi said that this women’s day 2023 celebration is unique for the state of Nagaland as the first two Naga women, Salhoutuonou Kruse and Hekani Jakhalu have made history in Nagaland Legislative Assembly.

“We can say that the people of Nagaland, both man and woman are genuinely happy to celebrate this international event in true sense as two Naga women creates history in the highest level of achievement in the state,” Savi stated.

The event is also to raise awareness about the ongoing fight for gender equality, he said. “It is a day to reflect on the progress made, call out inequality and drive greater change for woman’s rights and representation around the world. The role and contribution of women in the world are to be recognised and to be regarded in a most respectable manner in many areas,” he stated.

Referring to a landmark judgement for women passed by the Supreme Court, where a woman was a “housewife” when she died in a scooter accident along with her husband and the insurance company calculated compensation only based on the husband’s income.

Here the court did not accept, instead, it stated that a homemaker’s work contributes “in a very real way to the economic condition of the family, and the economy of the nation, regardless of the fact that it may have been traditionally excluded from economic analyses, Savi mentioned.

“It is a reflection of changing attitudes and mindsets and of our international law obligations. And, most importantly, it is a step towards the constitutional vision of social equality and ensuring dignity of life to all individuals,” he observed.
