Kohima Tobacco Free units observe pledge day

Kohima, February 2 (MExN): The Chief Medical Officer, Kohima along with the District Health Society, Department of Health & Family Welfare, NHM had a pledge day on National Tobacco Control Programme at the conference hall on February 2.

The programme was chaired by CMO, Dr Tumchobeni informing all that under Kohima District, the number of tobacco free declared units are: NHAK, schools-90, villages-13, teaching institutes, rehabilitation centre-2, orphanage-1, dental clinics-32, hospital-7 and police stations-32, stated a press release received here. 

District Nodal Officer, NTCP, Dr I Simon Sumi informed that youngsters start consuming either smoke or smokeless tobacco products as early as 15 to 24 years of age. He apprised how tobacco is causing premature mortality in the world and that “tobacco is the only legally available substance which kills when it is used as intended.”

The Nodal Officer also stated that one-third of the people are exposed to “second hand smoke” and about 6 lakh people die yearly prematurely as a result of exposure to smoking. He also cited on the importance of tobacco control by preventing on several evidence-based strategies which can reduce tobacco use and exposure to second hand smoke. He informed regarding the four strategies for preventing tobacco user in young people, by eliminating exposure to second hand smoke and advancing to healthy equity by identifying tobacco related disparities.
