Konyak summit adopt nine-point resolution

•    Extends ultimatum deadline by 10 days, with effect from January 15
•    Non-cooperation with Indian armed forces till justice is delivered

Mon, January 14 (MExN): Amid a delay in the release of the SIT report on the Oting killings, the Konyak people adopted a nine-point resolution during a summit held in Mon on Friday.

Following the ‘all Konyak summit’ on January 14, the Presidents the Konyak Union (KU), Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK), and Konyak Students' Union (KSU) issued a joint press release, stating that the 30-day ultimatum given by the Konyak people would be extended for 10 days with effect from January 15.

The original deadline of the ultimatum had expired on January 10.

In case of failure to comply with the ultimatum, the Konyak people, in accordance with the Eastern Naga People’s Organisation (ENPO) resolution of December 14, 2021, shall abstain from all national events within its customary jurisdiction as endorsed upon by the ENPO, the release stated.

“In accordance to the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) Resolution adopted in Longleng on December 14, 2021, the ‘Non- Cooperation’ declared against the Indian Armed Forces shall stand in force until justice is delivered,” it added.

While reaffirming its stance and demands as submitted to the President of India in December last year, the summit reiterated that “rank and files involved in massacring 14 innocent Konyak youths on December 4 and 5 must be prosecuted in the applicable civil court,” and the “justice taken report must be brought before the public domain.”

Special Investigation Team (SIT) and Army Court of Inquiry’s certified report must be shared to the Konyak Union for perusal after necessary formalities is completed from both the parties, it added.

The summit also resolved that all designated Army camps within Mon district that are located within the civilian inhabited areas must be vacated or relocated away from the civilian dominated areas, according to the release.

Meanwhile, the Konyak summit resolved to pursue development of the ‘Genocide Park’ on the very site that was demanded by the Konyak CSOs and allotted by the District administration. “Further all remains of December 4, 2021 incident at Oting-Yatong shall be brought to Mon Town and shall be preserved at the proposed Genocide Park,” it said.

Furthermore, the summit strongly endorsed the demands made by the Eastern Nagaland Students’ Federation (ENSF) in its memorandum submitted to the Prime Minister of India on December 24, 2021. Putting it on the Konyak civil society organizations to initiate for open table talks at the higher level for immediate justice and solution basing on the demands made on December 13, 2021, the summit also resolved to submit a memorandum to the State Government in this regard.

NSF urges Oting SIT to expedite investigation

Dimapur, January 14 (MExN): The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) has appealed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to probe the killing of 14 civilians in Mon district to expedite its investigation and make its report public, once legal formalities are completed.

“One month has lapsed where the SIT was supposed to submit its report. So, we appeal to the SIT team for speedy investigation so that justice is delivered as early as possible,” NSF President Kegwayhun Tep said on Friday.

On Thursday, the supervisory head of the SIT, ADG (Law & Order), Sandeep M Tamgadge addressed a press conference stating that the team was in the process of preparing the final report, pending the arrival of forensic reports.

Tamgadge, while citing legal procedure, maintained that it is not legally tenable to go public with the SIT’s report before it goes to the courtroom.

In this connection, Tep urged that the SIT to make its findings public, once it receives inputs from the forensics laboratories and submits its report to the court.

The NSF President also appealed to the concerned authority that whatever course of action is initiated towards the jawans and officers involved in the Oting incident be made known to the public.
