Konyak Union presses CM Rio for bifurcation of Mon district

Konyak Union delegation led by its president K Yamao Konyak called on Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio on August 29.

KOHIMA, AUGUST 30 (MExN): The Konyak Union has renewed its demand for the creation of new districts through the bifurcation of Mon district, citing administrative challenges, security concerns, and connectivity issues faced by the people of the region.

A delegation of the Union, led by its president K Yamao Konyak, called on Nagaland Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio at his office in Kohima on August 29 and submitted a reminder letter in continuation of its earlier correspondence dated November 29, 2024.

The Union stated that the demand for bifurcating Mon into smaller administrative units was endorsed during its 45th General Session, and reaffirmed in a joint meeting of the nine Konyak elected members and the Union on July 14, 2025, at Chümoukedima. It stressed that the reminder was not merely an institutional appeal, but a reflection of the collective aspiration and mounting pressure from the grassroots populace, who have consistently sought administrative decentralisation to ensure equitable development, efficient governance, and better access to public services.

Highlighting the vast geographical expanse, difficult terrain, and growing population of Mon, the Union argued that the current district structure poses significant administrative bottlenecks. The creation of new districts, it maintained, was imperative to address these challenges and fulfil the government’s vision of inclusive development and participatory governance.

The Union also raised concerns over the prevailing security situation in Mon district, particularly in the Tizit–Tiru–Naginimora border region, and appealed for urgent intervention by the state government.

Further, it urged the government to expedite the completion of the Nagaland Foothill Road project, pointing out that the Konyak people continue to face immense hardship while travelling through Assam highways.

The Chief Minister, while congratulating the newly inducted Konyak Union team led by Yamao Konyak, assured the delegation of his support and necessary interventions in addressing the concerns of the community.
