Mon, August 7 (MExN): The Konyak Union (KU) has issued a summon to one Hapwang Konyak of NSCN-K (Angmai), directing him to appear before the union within a week to explain his alleged role in threatening and summoning petrol pump dealers in Mon district.
The development comes amid a looming crisis, as the Mon District Petrol Pump Dealers Union (MDPPDU) has announced a total shutdown of all fuel outlets in the district from August 8, following an alleged directive from Hapwang Konyak to appear at the NSCN-K (Angmai) camp before August 7.
In a letter to the Chairman of the Konyak Region, NSCN-K (Angmai), the KU termed the “cross-border summoning” as unacceptable. “We cannot accept such cross-border summoning of business owners especially during this difficult situation. This is totally in contravenes to the resolution of the KU,” the letter, signed by KU President K Yamao Konyak and General Secretary Wango Konyak, stated.
The union has now summoned Hapwang Konyak to its headquarters office in Mon within one week from the date of the letter to “clarify his intention and explain to the Konyak Union.”
The KU underscored its obligation to protect local traders and ensure the safety and uninterrupted supply of fuel and other commodities, which it described as "vital for ongoing disaster relief and clearance operations" in the region.
The union has urged the NSCN-K (Angmai) leadership to ensure that Hapwang Konyak appears before the KU office at the earliest to resolve the matter, and has requested that the communication be treated with urgency.
Mention maybe made that in a letter dated July 6, 2026, the KU had announced an immediate ban on all forms of tax and ration collection across Mon district, citing the humanitarian crisis triggered by recent natural calamities in the region.
The decision was taken by the Konyak Union's Executive Council and Advisory Board, which said the district's villages and sub-divisions had been cut off and were struggling to survive amid flash floods, soil erosion and agricultural devastation that had destroyed crops, terrace fields and livestock, apart from disrupting educational institutions.
“No factions, groups, or individual shall demand, collect, or enforce any form of tax, or ration collection from any village, household, or business community within Mon District during this crisis,” the union directive stated.
The KU has directed all village authorities, including Anghs, chairmen and village councils, to strictly enforce the order within their jurisdictions and shield residents from any compliance pressure. All KU units and stakeholders have also been asked to monitor the ground situation and ensure no coercion is exerted on affected communities.
The union said the priority at this juncture must be immediate relief, infrastructure restoration and humanitarian aid for the crisis-hit district.
