Konyak Union urges all parties to shun violence, exercise restraint

MON, MARCH 5 (MExN): The Konyak Union Mon has expressed pain over the deteriorating situation in Mon district, particularly at Tizit, despite repeated appeals for peace and continuous reminder of the December 18 2007 ENPO resolution, which strictly prohibits total bloodshed within its jurisdiction.

Stating that it unequivocally and in no certain terms condemns any form of violence which disturbs the peaceful environment, the KU in a press statement expressed sadness over the recent loss of ss pvt Akai Pangmi in a gunfight with security forces (AR) at Shangsa village under Tizit sub-division on March 4.

“As an organization that has always advocated for peace and non-violence, we have consistently urged all groups to shun violence and embrace negotiation in our modern and civilized world. Violence is universally condemned because it brings no lasting peace,” the KU stated.

At the same time, it also stressed that people are tired of violence, threats, intimidation, multiple imposed taxation and extortion against their own community. “We see that imposing forceful taxation and extortion against the will of the people is akin to dacoity and does not represent the people’s aspiration. It is evident that such actions have lost popular support from the masses,” it went on to add.

The KU appealed to all concerned parties to exercise utmost restraint and work towards lasting peace, security and development. “Let us heed the sentiments and desires of the people and strive to represent their wishes,” it stated.
