Konyak Students Union Mokokchung (KSUM) clinched their first MDFA Trophy title in an intense final against defending champions Telongjem FC, securing a 1-0 victory at Imkongmeren Sports Complex. A packed crowd on October 30 witnessed a display of skill and hardiness as KSUM ended Telongjem’s three-year championship streak.
KSUM took an early lead with a superb goal from Angki Konyak in the 13th minute, setting the tone for a resilient performance. Despite Telongjem’s efforts to find an equalizer, they struggled against KSUM’s disciplined defense, leaving the score at 1-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Telongjem pressed hard, dominating possession and creating several scoring opportunities. However, KSUM’s defense remained steadfast, even as Telongjem struck the crossbar in a near miss. The underdogs held on to their lead until the final whistle, securing the MDFA Trophy for the first time in their history.
The winners received a cash prize of Rs 2 lakhs, certificates, and the tournament’s running trophy, while runners-up Telongjem FC were awarded Rs 1 lakh, certificates, and the Late Nokzar Memorial running trophy.
Individual honors included cash prizes of Rs 3,000 and citations. Nungsangyanger of Super Seniors FC was named Best Goalkeeper, Temsuyanger of Zonipang FC earned Best Defender, and Japeth Kath of Telongjem FC took home the Highest Goal Scorer award with six goals. Merangtemjen of MMSC was recognized as the Most Promising Player, while Menguzelie Rhutsa of Telongjem FC received the Player of the Tournament accolade.
This year’s MDFA Trophy marked its 32nd year, one of the longest-running tournaments in the region, featuring 12 teams since its kickoff on October 15.
