KU's vision for transforming Mon

Kohima, May 10 (MExN): The Konyak Union today outlined of its ‘broader vision’ for “utmost transformation and change” of Mon District by ‘de-enveloping and developing it with conscious mind.”

Outrightly debunking the popular misconception of “lesser focus on remote areas,” which it argued, is being “articulated through the narrowness of orthodoxy of minds,” the KU categorically declared that, “Mon is geographically located at the tri-junction that connects Nagaland with the State of Assam, Arunachal & Myanmar.” Thus, the region has immense economic and commercial prospect provided the policy makers change its traditional notion on remoteness, stated a press release from KU president Manlip Konyak and General Secretary Honang M. Konyak.

“The State Government should immediately stir up from its traditional nap and start to think and act upon the look east policy cautiously,” it said outlining its broader vision for the development of the region.

Key areas

Among others, the KU made proposal for establishing an “AIIMS like institution” at Tizit considering its geographical suitability and requirement. “Such cherished vision, if implemented shall deliver its services covering Assam, Arunachal, Myanmar and Nagas in particular,” it said adding, “Medicine without border shall deliver social justice and health care even beyond the region.”

In accordance with its memorandum to the Prime Minister of India, the State Government is requested to pursue the case on top priority, the Union added.

The KU further said that a project “Mon-Myanmar corridor” is being initiated locally whereby every village’s reserved forest is proposed to be connected and a chain of green corridor is developed. This project is proposed considering the rapid global warming and its impact the environment, it said.

“The concern department is requested to provide technical inputs in materialising people’s initiatives,” it added.

In the area of education, the Union argued that the existence of the department is futile “when it failed to deliver qualitative governance to the existing educational institution.” The concerned nodal agencies should immediately visit Wangkhao College Mon and streamline all anomalies and irregularities before it is too late, it said.

It also urged the Mon Deputy Commissioner “to revive and reconstitute a strong statutory College Management Board.”

The KU has also placed a representation before the State Government for immediate completion and establishment of the Polytechnic institution before the commencement of the next academic session. It was part its 6 point Memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on April 27 for “immediate attention and execution,” it said.

On road development, the KU lamented the systematic deplorable and deprivation of the execution of the road development in the district, but stated that PDA government should “sincerely execute its devotion and commitment of 'Change is coming' by de-enveloping and developing it.”

Noting that road sector is the lifeline of the people, the Union pointed out that the historic salt passage/routes (Zero point – Naginimora) had been completely delinked with the proposed two lane road at Zero point.

In order to restore historic salt routes of the Konyaks, the government should provide road connectivity to that region without delay, it added. Further stating that Mon Town, the social and political hub of the Konyaks is one of the remotest districts, it called "shorter road alignment connecting with the state capital" through NH 702.

As per the general aspiration of the masses and upholding the wisdom of its Advisory board, the KU had proposed to conduct a “practical alignment without any political bias and favouritism,” it added.

“No section of public should work on their self motive interest which could hamper the benefits to the general Konyaks,” it further directed. “The Union had also demanded for resumption & completion of all those halted & abandoned developmental works within its soil immediately,” it added.
