KVK Longleng equip farmers with scientific and sustainable agricultural practices

Longleng, February 6 (MExN): The ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Longleng conducted the Krishi Samridhi Swarna Week, emphasising on training and awareness programme designed to equip farmers with scientific and sustainable agricultural practices. 

The event, held on February 4 in Pongching village and February 5 in Mongtikang village, brought together agricultural experts, district officials, and farmers for interactive learning sessions, hands-on training, and discussions on modern farming techniques, stated a press release received here.

The programme was inaugurated by W Manpai Phom, Deputy Commissioner Longleng, who emphasised the importance of biodiversity conservation and the need to integrate scientific agricultural methods with traditional knowledge to ensure sustainable farming. He also encouraged farmers to explore government schemes and technological advancements for improved productivity. 

The inaugural session was attended by Dr Lanunochetla, District Agriculture Officer, Longleng; Talimeren, District Horticulture Officer; and the Chairman of Pongching Village Council. The dignitaries highlighted the importance of diversified cropping, natural farming and horticulture-based income generation to enhance rural livelihoods.

The session concluded with vote of thanks by Shubhendu Kumar Behera, Subject matter specialist, KVK-Longleng.

Following the inaugural session, farmers participated in technical training sessions led by subject matter specialists from KVK. 
Dr Kalu Ram, SMS (Fruit Science), shared best practices for the scientific cultivation of orange, focusing on orchard management, disease control and nutrient management. Avaneesh Kumar, SMS (Agronomy), trained farmers in the preparation of vermicompost, emphasizing organic methods to enhance soil health. Shubhendu Kumar Behera, SMS (Plant Pathology), introduced natural farming practices, teaching farmers eco-friendly methods to reduce dependency on chemical inputs.

In the afternoon session of the following day, a competition was organized to promote indigenous skills and rural entrepreneurship among the farmers. The competition featured three categories: Preparation of Indigenous Dishes, showcasing traditional culinary skills using local agricultural produces and bamboo basket making for agricultural purposes and locally-made farm tools or handicraft making, which promoted traditional craftsmanship. The day concluded with the prize distribution and felicitation of participants, who were recognized for their contributions to preserving and innovating traditional farming-related crafts.

On February 5, the programme continued in Mongtikang Village, where the technical training sessions followed the same structure as the previous day. The dignitaries and guests at the event provided valuable insights on farm diversification, the adoption of scientific interventions and the need for market linkages. They encouraged farmers to participate in government-supported agricultural programs to access financial and technical support. 

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr Pallabi Phukan, SMS (Social Science)
