Tuensang, May 25 (MExN): A one day farmers training programme was organized under Soil Conservation division on May 21 at Alisopur village. The training covered various topics on Azolla, crop rotations, soil and water conservation and water management in agriculture.
Film on soil and water conservation for sloppy lands and water management was also screened, a press release informed.
Imtilemla ACTO (soil conservation) trained the participants on how azolla can be raised both in the field and in homestead farming, its benefits as dual cropping with rice and how to make azolla compost. She also elaborated its other uses for poultry, livestocks and fishes.
The trainees were also distributed with azolla culture for effective dissemination and adoption of the azolla technology. She also highlighted the importance of crop rotations, its role in insect pest and disease management and soil fertility management, and how a properly planned crop rotation will benefit the farmers if adopted under a permanent farming system.
The topic on soil and water conservation was covered mainly to create awareness among the farmers about the ongoing soil erosion by rainfall/ water erosion in the fields and instill a sense for natural resource management.
She also explained different soil and water conservation measures which can be taken up in their fields and on the different ways for saving water for irrigation and rain water harvesting at homes and in the field.
Altogether 45 farmers and farm women of the village including village council and church leaders attended the training.
