ICAR-KVK Wokha organised a three-day on-campus capacity building programme on Artificial Insemination (AI) Technology in Pig at its conference hall, Wokha from August 27-29. The programme was conducted under an externally funded project supported by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India.

Altogether 25 farmers, rural youth and field functionaries representing seven districts of Nagaland—Longleng, Mokokchung, Wokha, Kiphire, Shamator, Tseminyu and Tuensang—participated in the training. The sessions aimed at skill enhancement and attitudinal change, adopting approaches such as micro-lab exercises, SWOT analysis, group activities, lectures, live demonstrations, laboratory procedures, and interactive discussions.

The technical sessions were delivered by experts including Dr Moakum Pongen, Dr Yanben Kikon, Department of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry; Dr N Khumdemo Ezung; Dr Sandeep Deshmukh, Senior Scientist & Head, ICAR-KVK Wokha; Dr Mhalo Tungoe; Dr Lily Ngullie; and Shri Anuranjan Singh, Skill Officer, DC Office Wokha. Topics covered included AI practices and reproductive management in pigs, feeding and nutritional strategies with emphasis on maize and concentrate feed formulation, preventive disease management with reference to African Swine Fever, hygienic pork production and pig farm waste utilisation, small-scale pig breeding systems, and entrepreneurship development.

Echungbemo Erui, SDO (Civil), Wokha, graced the closing ceremony as Special Guest and highlighted the urgent need for adopting scientific piggery practices in Nagaland. Stating that pig rearing is both a cultural preference and a vital source of livelihood, he lauded KVK Wokha for introducing advanced reproductive technologies at the grassroots level. He also urged participants to act as ambassadors of change in their respective districts.

The Skill Officer underscored that skill-based training must go hand-in-hand with entrepreneurship and livelihood promotion, thereby enabling rural youth to set up enterprises, avail government schemes, and generate employment. Meanwhile, Dr Deshmukh stressed that AI in pigs has immense potential to improve productivity, enhance genetic quality, and bridge the state’s growing demand-supply gap of pork, assuring continuous technical support and follow-up from KVK.

The programme concluded with certificate distribution, a vote of thanks, and a group photograph, marking a milestone in strengthening the piggery sector through science-led interventions and capacity building under DST support.
